Jeff Bezos: In the end, we are our choices

Outstanding speech from Jeff Bezos to Princeton students: “In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story.”

Here is a longer excerpt. Full speech can be found here.

Tomorrow, in a very real sense, your life — the life you author from scratch on your own — begins. How will you use your gifts? What choices will you make?

Will inertia be your guide, or will you follow your passions?

Will you follow dogma, or will you be original?

Will you choose a life of ease, or a life of service and adventure?

Will you wilt under criticism, or will you follow your convictions?

Will you bluff it out when you’re wrong, or will you apologize?

Will you guard your heart against rejection, or will you act when you fall in love?

Will you play it safe, or will you be a little bit swashbuckling?

When it’s tough, will you give up, or will you be relentless?

Will you be a cynic, or will you be a builder?

Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind?

I will hazard a prediction. When you are 80 years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story.

Office on Windows Phone 7

Wish edits to documents were as easy on the current Office for Windows Mobile. I like using Office on my Touch Pro2 but it is nowhere near the experience that we will apparently get with Windows Phone 7.

Splits conversation views in Outlook 2010

The new conversation threads view in Outlook 2010 is a great feature, it already has improved my inbox view a lot. Here is a video from the Outlook team at Microsoft that shows what happens when a thread gets split into several threads. It took me a day to get used to it (old habits die hard) but now that I’ve got the hang of it, I wouldn’t want to miss it. Now I am hoping we will migrate to Exchange 2010 soon too, so that I get the threaded conversations on my smartphone too.

HP Slate – looking good

Really like the built-in camera. When will this thing be released? Can’t wait to find out more details.

New pitch at BMO Field in timelapse

Innovation = Insight, Plan and Commercialization?

“When I use the word innovation, I think of three interlocking components:

  • Insight or inspiration suggesting an opportunity to do something different to create value
  • An idea or plan to build an offering based on that insight or inspiration
  • The translation of that plan into a successful business (in simple terms, commercialization)”

Schedule view in Outlook 2010

The schedule view in Outlook 2010 looks like it could be really useful. I’ve been trying out the Beta version of Outlook 2010 at home with my private email account but not for scheduling meetings with others. Schedule view in Outlook 2010

I already can’t wait to move to Outlook 2010 at work, just because of the threaded email conversation view. Not everyone likes it but just from using it on the private account, I know it will make my work inbox easier to manage.

Falschspieler
